چکیده

A demonstration was conducted to examine the stored forage yield and stored forage quality of two different hay forage management systems. The forage management systems were a hay harvest only system or a complimentary hayround bale silage harvest system. The hay system harvested bermudagrass forage as hay during the summer when weather conditions allowed, the complimentary system harvested bermudagrass forage on a 4-wk schedule as either hay or round bale silage depending upon weather conditions. The hay-round bale silage complimentary system resulted in two more cuttings of forage harvested, nearly 55 tons more forage dry matter harvested, and harvested forage (either hay or round bale silage) that was greater in crude protein and energy. The utilization of a complimentary forage preservation system that incorporated the use of round bale silage resulted in a greater amount of forage to be harvested and stored forage that was greater in protein and energy compared to a hay only harvest system.

Feeding Characteristics of Round-Bale Silages

Despite some production issues associated with preservation of forages as roundbale silage, potential benefits with respect to minimizing DM loss and preserving forage quality compared with traditional hay preservation systems are well documented. Less information is available regarding the feeding value of forages preserved in this manner. This paper attempts to address issues associated with ...

Conserved Forage (silage and Hay): Progress and Priorities

Forage conservation permits a better supply of quality feed when forage production is low. While haymaking and ensiling have been practiced for generations, research is still needed to 1) understand the processes affecting quality during harvesting and storage and 2) develop practical means to minimize losses and enhance quality. Several trends in harvesting forages for silage are notable. Kern...

Bale Location Effects on Nutritive Value and Fermentation Characteristics of Annual Ryegrass Bale Stored in In-line Wrapping Silage

In southeastern regions of the US, herbage systems are primarily based on grazing or hay feeding with low nutritive value warm-season perennial grasses. Nutritious herbage such as annual ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam.) may be more suitable for preserving as baleage for winter feeding even with more intensive production inputs. Emerging in-line wrapped baleage storage systems featuring rapid ...

Effect of Wet Brewers Grains or Dried Distillers Grains as Supplements to Round Bale Silage or Dry Hay on Intake and Digestibility in Steers

The objective of this study was to examine the effect of different forage and supplement combinations on forage and supplement intake and ruminal parameters in steers. Six ruminally fistulated steers were assigned to 1 of 4 treatments during 4 different data collection periods. Treatments were 1) Hay +wet brewers grains (WBG); 2) Hay +dried distillers grains (DDG); 3) round bale silage (RBS) + ...

On-farm solid state simultaneous saccharification and fermentation of whole crop forage rice in wrapped round bale for ethanol production

BACKGROUND In an attempt to reduce environmental loading during ethanol production from cellulosic plant biomass, we have previously proposed an on-site solid state fermentation (SSF) method for producing ethanol from whole crops, which at the same time provides cattle feed without producing wastes. During the ensiling of freshly harvested plant biomass with cellulase and glucoamylase, the adde...
